For CA’s High Frequency Words product for grades K-2, we began by crafting a few design principals.
- We wanted to construct a flow that avoid feeding large amounts of content to users who did not need that specific instruction.
- We knew that the content itself – making frequently used words immediately recognizable- would lend to repetition. We wanted to lean into that rather than pretend it wasn’t the case.
- We wanted it to be fun, and to promote the idea that words can be playful and play things.
- We wanted the interactions to be tactile and center-stage, to promote the idea of learning by doing.
Starting with these principals was a fundamental decision in the success of the product. We were able to meet each of these goals, and results in the field have shown that the product is extremely effective.
